The PlayStation 5 is a powerful console that produces a lot of heat. If it cannot get rid of that heat, it will warn you and may shut down to protect itself.
Check ventilation first
- Give the console clear space on all sides; do not put it inside a closed cabinet
- Keep it off carpet and away from heaters
- Check the vents for dust build-up
- Try the console in a cooler position to see if shutdowns stop
Power and software checks
- Plug the power cable straight into a wall socket, not an extension shared with other devices
- Check the power cable is pushed fully into the back of the console
- Install the latest system software
- Turn off rest mode for a while to see if shutdowns happen only in rest mode
When it needs repair
If the PS5 shuts down in a well-ventilated space, beeps, shows a warning about temperature, or will not turn back on, it needs a diagnostic. Internal dust, a failing fan or a power supply fault are the usual causes. We clean and test the console and quote before any repair.
